Iglesias is a nice town set far away from the strain of the cities, surrounded by wild and pictoresque places, where it's possible to see the ruins of the ancient mines. The city centre is topped by the Castle of San Guantino and it still keeps part of the old walls and Pisan Towers that surrounded it. There are some nice and narrow streets made precious with ancient balconies and shops, where it is possible to smell the odour of fresh-baked bread, the Sardinian sweeties and "su mustazzeddu". This town is surrounded by the amazing forest of Marganai, one of the most interesting faunas of Sardinia, where wild boars, beech martens, wildcats, deers and turtle-doves live in this beautiful paradise. Nearby the mining villages of Malacalzetta and Arenas-Tinì, real examples of industrial archaeology in a still uncontaminated environment. The coast is characterized by the amazing beach of Funtanamare and the little villages of Nebida and Masua from where it is possible to see beautiful landscapes. Very famous the pure white stack of "Pan di Zucchero", the harbour of Porto Flavia, in Masua ( built on a rock overhanging the sea). The amazing natural heritage of Iglesiente made possible the creation (30 September 1998) of the first Geomining, Historical and Environmental Park of the world, sponsored by Unesco, to valorize the abandoned mines and the whole region.
